Sinus Lift
If you have missing teeth located in your upper jaw, you may be a viable candidate for a sinus lift. Sinus lifts are recommended for patients whose teeth have been missing long enough that the shape of the area around the missing tooth or teeth has begun to change. As this change occurs, your sinuses begin to expand into the area that your bone previously occupied. In order for your dental implant to properly be secured, it will be necessary to perform a sinus lift, which will effectively move the sinus back to its original location and will also allow your dentist to place additional bone where the implant can be adhered.
At Platt Family Dentistry, we offer a wide range of services, from cosmetic to restorative dentistry. From Dayton to across the country and internationally, we welcome all patients to experience outstanding customer service and tailored treatment plans. If you are scheduled for a sinus lift, or if you would like to ask our staff any questions about this procedure or schedule an appointment, please contact us today.

Sinus Lift Procedure Explained
Prior to scheduling a sinus lift, your dentist will need to conduct a thorough examination, which will likely involve CT scans and X-rays to determine the severity of your case and what specific type of interventions will be most effective.
Prior to performing the sinus lift procedure, we will administer an anesthetic. Once you have reached the proper level of sedation, we will begin the sinus lift procedure by making tiny incisions in the molar and premolar areas. Next, a small opening will be made to the jawbone, which will allow access to the membrane lining the sinus, which will subsequently be pushed up. Once this is pushed up and the original space is reclaimed, we will place a bone grafting material (either natural bone from your own bone or donor or a synthetic material) into the area, after which we will sew the area shut so the healing process can begin.
The healing process from this procedure can take several months to progress to the point where you will be able to grow new and viable bone in the area of the graft. Your dentist or periodontist will continue to monitor the graft during this time with regularly scheduled visits. Once it has been determined that the graft is strong and secure, the process of placing dental implants can begin.
Although dental bone graft procedures are often successful, it is important to be aware that not every patient experiences success with this procedure. The most common reason a dental bone graft is not successful is due to the presence of an infection in the mouth. For this reason, we strongly encourage you to consult with your dentist or periodontist to address any issues or concerns you might have prior to committing to having a sinus lift/bone graft procedure performed.
Sinus Lift Candidates
If you meet any of the following criteria, you may be a good candidate for a sinus lift procedure:
- You have multiple teeth missing in your back jaw
- There is a significant amount of missing bone in your back jaw
- You have missing teeth as a result of a medical condition or birth defect
- You require assistance from dental implants due to missing the majority of your teeth in your upper jaw
Sinus Lift Aftercare
Following your sinus lift procedure, it is important to closely follow the post-operative instructions provided by your dentist to lessen pain and prevent an infection from developing. It is especially important to avoid sneezing if possible. It is also important to use gauze pads regularly until your bleeding has stopped, changing the pads every 30 to 45 minutes. Patients are also reminded use a soft-bristle toothbrush and avoid vigorous brushing, as this can easily cause bleeding to occur again.
Results will vary from patient to patient, but generally a sinus lift procedure will take roughly 4-89 months to heal from. Once this healing is complete, your dental implants will be ready to be placed.
Cost of Sinus Lift
The final cost of your procedure will be determined by a variety of factors, such as the severity of your case and what type of dental plan you are currently enrolled in. Our office does accept cash, most major credit cards, money orders, and personal checks.
