Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing and deep cleaning procedures are performed to remove etiologic agents such as plaque or tartar, which can cause gum tissue and bone to experience inflammation. Both procedures are non-surgical and effective in halting and even reversing periodontal disease.

To determine what intervention is best for you, your dentist will begin by taking X-rays, in addition to performing a general visual examination to determine the current health of your gums. During the scaling process, your dentist will use special instruments to remove the plaque and tartar from the root and surface of the crown. During the root planing process, your dentist will remove the dentin and cementum, and then use special tools to smooth the root of your tooth, as doing so will help reduce the possibility of bacteria from developing.

At John T. Green DDS Inc., we offer a wide range of services, from cosmetic to restorative dentistry. From Dayton to across the country and internationally, we welcome all patients to experience outstanding customer service and tailored treatment plans. If you are scheduled for a scaling and root planing procedure or a deep cleaning, or if you would like to ask our staff any questions about this procedure or schedule an appointment, please contact us today.

Reasons for Procedure

There are several reasons and benefits that are associated with having a scaling and root planing procedure, including but not limited to the following:

  • Prevention of Periodontitis: By removing bacteria, you will be able to halt or reverse the effects of periodontal disease, which can begin to negatively impact other areas of the body.
  • Protection of Teeth: As the pockets in your gum begin to deepen because of the bacteria present, they will be susceptible to housing more bacteria, which can result in chronic inflammation that can cause jawbone deterioration and the loss of teeth.
  • Improved Aesthetic Appearance: In addition to the restorative benefits, scaling and root planing also removes unsightly stains on your teeth.
  • Improves Halitosis (bad breath): Halitosis is one of the most common signs that periodontal disease has developed. Having a scaling and root planing procedure will remove the collected bacteria that causes the unpleasant odor.

Deep Cleaning Process

A deep cleaning (dental prophylaxis) is another commonly used intervention for addressing periodontal disease. Most professional dental cleanings involve the following:

  • Plaque Removal: Bacteria can begin to form on the teeth and eventually develop into a film that irritates and inflames the gums, which can eventually turn into gingivitis or periodontitis. During your deep cleaning, your dentist will use special tools to remove this plaque, which will effectively halt or reverse the affected area.
  • Tartar Removal: When plaque is left untreated for too long, it can harden and turn into tartar. Tartar is much harder to remove, and also forms below the gum line, which requires the use of special instruments to address. If you have tartar removed, your dentist or periodontist may recommend scheduling a follow up appointment within a few months of treatment to ensure that periodontal disease is not developing further.
  • Teeth Polishing:  Teeth polishing involves the removal of plaque or stains that are not able to be removed through conventional brushing or scaling

Addressing Periodontal Issues Before it Develops

Gum disease has become increasingly common over the last several years, with more than half of all Americans over the age of 30 suffering from periodontitis, according to recent studies. And it only gets worse as we age, with more than 70 percent of adults over 65 suffering from advanced gum disease.

If you ever notice a pink tinge of blood on your toothbrush after you have brushed your teeth, you may be suffering from gum disease. Scheduling a checkup is one of the best ways to catch periodontal disease early, and a deep cleaning is the best way to halt or reverse the impact of this disease

Deep Teeth Cleaning Aftercare & Oral Care

Following your scaling and root planing and/or deep cleaning, it will not be necessary to make any significant changes to your overall dental maintenance or dramatic changes to your diet, although your dentist may prescribe antibiotics to help speed up the recovery from the infection. Aside from this, the most important thing you can to maintain your results is to continue practicing good oral hygiene habits and scheduling a regular deep cleaning every six months or more frequently if your case is especially severe.

Costs Associated with Scaling & Root Planing

The final cost of your procedure will be determined by a variety of factors, such as the severity of your case and what type of dental plan you are currently enrolled in. Our office does accept cash, most major credit cards, money orders, and personal checks.
